Geologists also discovered six extensive sand sheets that blanketed the coastal plain separating the logs from the shoreline. The sheets contain sand from nearshore marine environments transported inland by six large tsunamis in the past 1700 years, including the 1957 tsunami. Carbon-14 age estimates for the sand sheets indicate that Stardust Bay has been hit by large tsunamis every 300–340 years, on average. Credit: Robert Witter
